 Puna, Quebrada de Humahuaca e Iruya - 3 days

 

Wonderful Puna with almost virgin landscapes, the salt lake. The most famous ravine in Argentina and a small village, Iruya, cultural border between Indian cultures and today way of life.

Day 1: This tour to the Puna goes along the railway of the “Train to the clouds”. It includes a guided tour in the archaeological site Ruinas de Tastil, Abra Blanca (4080 m. above sea level, San Antonio de Los Cobres, Ruta 40 north bound through the Puna up to Salinas Grandes where we visit the salt lake, we leave the Puna through a mountain pass 4170 m. above sea level and we descend 2000 m. in 35 km. along Cuesta de Lipan down to the small town of Purmamarca where we vist Cerro de Siete Colores, Paseo de Los Colorados , the handcrafts market and we spend the night in Purmamarca.

 

Day 2: We visit Quebrada de Humahuaca, in the small town of Uquia we visit the ancient church which guards the famous paintings of the Harquebusier Angels and a vicuña farm, we visit the town of Humahuaca and then we drive north towards a detour leading into Cordillera de Zenta, the village of Iturbe, nex we wade across Rio Grande possing by Chaupi Rodeo where we start going upwards to Abra del Condor, 4000 m. above sea level, there we visit the Apacheta, a shrine made with piled stomes, and the we drive down to Iruya to spend the night.

 

Day 3: We get back to Quebrada de Humahuaca along the road that goes through Abra del Condor, we stop at Tilcara to visit the town and the archaeological site Pucara e Tilcara, we then drive southwards passing along the towns of Maimara and Tumbaya, we tour Jujuy city and then we drive back to Salta along Camino de cornisa, driving through a cloudy forest or yunga area.

 

 

 Alternatives

Valles Calchaquies 3 days and Puna, Quebrada de Humahuaca e Iruya 3 days is the most complete combination to know the region.
